General Comments70 km west from Santiago de Cuba, the coral reef has taken peculiar forms including the reefs near the coast, hillocks scattered in long sand beds, coral ridges, shallow and deep drop-offs and impressive walls. A privileged location near the place where the Spanish-American Naval Battle took place in 1898. There are remains of three ships from the Admiral Cervera’s Spanish Fleet sunk during the battle: the Oquendo and the Vizcaya, which can be seen at less than 5 meters (16 feet), and the Christopher Columbus, between 7 and 37 meters (23 and 121 feet). Diving sites: 22, located at 15 minutes from the coast. Nearest hyperbaric chamber: Santiago de Cuba Military Hospital 38 miles away.
